Vlieland The Netherlands

The Wadden Islands, a beautiful place in the north of the Netherlands. Between the islands and the mainland is the Wadden Sea. An area that falls dry at low tide and is rich in seals and birds. The Wadden Sea is the largest tidal area in the world and part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Are you a real nature lover? Then pay a visit to the smallest inhabited Wadden Island, Vlieland. You get there by ferry from shipping company Doeksen from Harlingen (also nice to see). You can also take a water taxi. The car remains in Harlingen, because Vlieland is a “car-free” island.

Camping Stortemelk is popular with most Dutch people who like to camp, but if you want to enjoy peace and quiet, then stay with the forester at nature campsite de Lange paal and go for a walk.

Explore the island by bike or walk one of the beautiful trails. Take a look at the Vliehors on the west side of the island. This is about 21 square kilometres of sandbank. A place where Westeynde, the main village of Vlieland, used to be. (Good to know: The terrain is also used by the Ministry of Defence, which means that you can only enjoy this beautiful piece of nature during the weekends).

In addition to its nature, Vlieland has a great deal to offer in the way of culture. If you want to enjoy the best of both worlds, visit the open-air cinema. In summer Podium Vlieland shows a film three times a week in fine weather, in the middle of the dunes next to the watchtower at the marina.

And last but certainly not least: Into the great wide open, a sustainable multi-day cultural festival including music, art and film in the middle of nature.
As they describe it themselves: “Oysters from the mud flats, freshly caught sea bass, prepared with care. Going wild on a festival field and campfire songs on the beach. Intimate festival feeling and the ‘great wide open.
